A 58-year-old man, arrested Sunday for an alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Florida, is identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, a self-employed affordable housing builder from Hawaii. Routh frequently shared his political views on social media, where he occasionally criticized the former president.
Authorities believe Routh was planning to attack Trump while he was playing golf. On an X account linked to him, Routh had previously made posts referencing an assassination attempt on Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania. In separate posts, he tagged President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, urging them to visit those injured at the rally.
Law enforcement officials have identified Ryan Wesley Routh as the suspect arrested in Martin County for allegedly shooting at Donald Trump. According to records, the 58-year-old spent most of his life in North Carolina before relocating to Kaaawa, Hawaii, in 2018, where he and his son ran a company that built sheds, as seen in archived versions of the business’s website.
Routh was active on social media, often posting about the war in Ukraine. He even had a website to raise funds and recruit volunteers to join the fight against Russia’s invasion in Kyiv.
In June 2020, Routh posted on X, urging then-President Trump to issue an executive order directing the Justice Department to prosecute police misconduct, suggesting this could secure his re-election.
Routh has connections to North Carolina, where public records show he registered as an unaffiliated voter in 2012. Despite having no party affiliation, he participated in the state’s Democratic primary in March, as confirmed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
In 2022, Routh made multiple posts on X, showing strong support for Ukraine. He expressed his willingness to join the fight, declaring, “we need to burn the Kremlin to the ground.” In March 2022, he wrote, “I AM WILLING TO FLY TO KRAKOW AND GO TO THE BORDER OF UKRAINE TO VOLUNTEER AND FIGHT AND DIE…Can I be the example We must win.”
Federal campaign finance records reveal that Routh has donated over $100 through ActBlue, a platform that processes donations for Democratic candidates.
ast year, Routh used his personal Facebook account to urge foreign nationals to join the war effort. Beginning in October 2023, he posted frequently, attempting to recruit Afghan soldiers by positioning himself as an unofficial liaison for the Ukrainian government. In one post, written in both English and Pashto, he claimed, “Ukraine is somewhat interested in 3,000 soldiers,” asking Afghan soldiers with passports to send him copies for submission to Ukrainian authorities.
Routh’s LinkedIn profile states that in 2018, he founded a company called Camp Box Honolulu, which builds storage units and tiny houses. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, he once donated a structure to support the homeless.
On his LinkedIn page, Routh emphasized that his work wasn’t driven by money but by creating opportunities for others. “Work has never been about money rather building frameworks for people to thrive and succeed,” he wrote. He also highlighted his passion for innovative and artistic projects.
Camp Box Honolulu’s website promotes the use of economical and efficient building methods to solve local problems, saying it “produces solutions to our own problems right here on the island.”
